In Nha Trang "a boat trip" is not one product but three, and they differ by a factor of seventy. You can pay 600,000 VND (about $23) for a seat on a wooden boat that leaves the pier at half past eight with twenty-four other people, or $1,590 for a catamaran that belongs to you and your friends for five hours. Both are boat trips. Below is what each of the three formats actually buys.

Three price tags, three formats. Shared island day: 600,000 VND (about $23) per person with Vuongland Travel; $43-46 per person with Vietnam Fantastic. Boat rental: 1,200,000-4,900,000 VND (about $46-188) for the hull. Private catamaran charter: from $1,390 for five hours.

What is in the shared island day?

This is the format most people mean. Pick-up from the hotel in an air-conditioned van, a wooden or speed boat out to two or three anchorages, snorkelling gear handed out on deck, lunch on board, back at the pier in the early afternoon.

The cheapest of them is also the most explicit about what it covers: the 600,000 VND (about $23) Vuongland day lists the air-conditioned van, the English-speaking guide, the Vietnamese lunch with fruit, snorkel gear and life jacket, admission fees and travel insurance, in a group capped at twenty-five. Its cancellation rule is equally explicit and worth reading before you book: cancel inside twenty-four hours and the full price is charged.

The Vietnam Fantastic pair is priced by height rather than age: children under one metre travel free, from one metre to 1.39 m pay 70 per cent, from 1.4 m the adult fare.

The Deluxe tour at $46 includes the mud bath on Hon Tam, which is the part of the day that is not spent in the water at all; the Fantastic tour at $43 swaps that for fishing tackle and a stop at Mini Beach. Neither includes VAT or drinks with the meal.

Russian-run boats, and why they cost a little more

Nha Trang is unusual among Asian resorts in having a whole layer of operators who work in Russian. VictorDivePro asks $45 per person for two snorkelling stops, with hotel transfer, mask, snorkel, fins and a wetsuit in the price, and states that the trip suits guests from six years old and that you do not need to be able to swim because the vest holds you up.

The $40 trip run by divenhatrang.ru leaves the pier at 07:30 and is back around 13:00, works Dam Bay and Hon Mun, and puts tea, coffee, fruit and lunch on a two-deck boat.

What does renting the boat itself cost?

The third format has no seats to sell: you take the hull. Vinh San Ho Nha Trang publishes a rate card by destination, and each line is a range because the tariff steps up with the size of the boat, from a 1-10 guest band to 36-45 guests.

Hon Mun1,900,000-4,900,000 VND (about $73-188)
Hon Tam1,400,000-3,900,000 VND (about $54-150)
Con Se Tre1,700,000-4,700,000 VND (about $65-181)

Wooden boat1,400,000-2,800,000 VND (about $54-108)

For a group of eight, the speedboat to Hon Mun lands close to the price of eight seats on a shared trip, but the boat waits for you rather than for the schedule. The crossing itself is 40-50 minutes from shore.

Private yachts and catamarans

At the top of the range the boat is a destination in itself. Theia Yachting's 13.6-metre Coral goes out for five hours at $1,390 and takes up to 28 guests; the price covers round-trip hotel transfers, food and drinks, towels, snorkelling gear, SUP boards, fishing tackle, an inflatable water slide, a photographer and an English-speaking guide.

The VEGAYACHTS Seawind 1160 day sail is the other well-known boat out of Ana Marina: 28,000,000 VND (about $1,077) for the whole yacht, 08:45 to 14:30, with two swimming stops and a fishing village on the way back.

What the weather changes

Read the small print on the shared trips and the same sentence appears in three unrelated places. Vietnam Fantastic writes that the schedule changes with the real weather situation, and that in bad weather the boat goes to the coral reef instead of Mun Island.

Vuongland lists "speed boat / wooden boat (depend the weather)" inside its own inclusions. VictorDivePro says the route is chosen by weather and visibility on the day. None of the three promises the outer reef unconditionally, and that is the honest way to read every Nha Trang boat programme.

How long does a boat day actually take?

Six to eight hours door to door. The shortest of the shared trips is Vuongland at 08:30-14:30; the longest is the Fantastic tour, which drops you back at 15:30.

What is normally not in the price?

On the Vietnam Fantastic trips: VAT, drinks with the meal and anything outside the programme. On Vuongland: personal expenses. Water park style attractions at Mini Beach are charged separately.

Can you take small children?

Vuongland describes its trip as suitable for all ages and sells a child fare at 420,000 VND (about $16). Vietnam Fantastic charges by height. VictorDivePro states from six years old.
