Two kinds of sailing boat leave Puerto Colón for the same stretch of water off Costa Adeje, and they sell two different days. The catamaran sells a deck; the yacht sells the absence of a crowd.
Neither operator publishes what happens to your money when the captain cancels for conditions. Agree it before you pay. And the yacht does not publish its duration — ask for it, with the departure time, when you book.
The catamaran: three fares
Freebird One runs two hours at €30 with a cetacean guide, beer, soft drinks and water and no hotel transfer on that fare; three hours at €47 with a swim stop, a sandwich and free hotel pick-up and drop-off; and a 4.5-hour cruise at €62 up to the Los Gigantes cliffs and Masca with a hot lunch, sangria and transfer. Children aged 4–11 pay half on all three.
The yacht: one fare, eleven people
Tenerife Sailing Charters' own 40-foot yacht sells a shared place at €65, or €55 for a child under 10, with a maximum of eleven guests aboard. Transport from and to your hotel is included, and the captain serves snacks, fruit, baguettes and drinks. The boat sails or motors depending on the wind, and it goes out looking for whales and dolphins like everything else here.
The number the yacht does not publish
One thing the operator does not publish is the duration. Ask for it, along with the departure time, when you book.
What is the difference, really?
It is not the water and it is not the wildlife — both fish the same channel. It is the number of people between you and the rail, and the way the boat moves. A catamaran is stable and roomy; a sailing yacht heels, which is part of the appeal and also the reason to think twice if someone in the party is prone to seasickness.
Price per hour
On price per hour the comparison depends on a number the yacht does not publish, so compare what you can: €47 buys three hours on a large catamaran with a transfer and a swim stop; €65 buys a place among no more than eleven people with a transfer and food.
