Hon Mun is the small rocky island at the outer edge of Nha Trang bay, and it is the reason the boats leave at seven in the morning rather than ten.
Nearly every diving and snorkelling trip sold in the city names it, either as the destination or as the first stop before Hon Tam and Dam Bay. It also sits inside a conservation area, which raises the question every visitor asks at the buoy line: who collects the fee, and is it in the ticket already?
The short answer is that it is, at the operators who mention it. Four of them keep it inside the number: Sailing Club Divers, Vietnam Active, Vietnam Fantastic and Vuongland Travel. The boat-charter operators — Vịnh San Hô, Lily Yacht and VEGAYACHTS — publish no breakdown of the fare at all, so the fee has to be asked about before you pay.
Whoever mentions the fee has included it. Sailing Club Divers lists the marine park fee as included, Vietnam Active covers «all marine park and diving fees», Vietnam Fantastic includes the island and conservation-area entrance fee, and Vuongland Travel includes admission fees. What is left outside the price is VAT and drinks with lunch at Vietnam Fantastic. The boat-charter operators list no breakdown on their pages, so the fee has to be confirmed with them.
What is Hon Mun and why does every boat go there?
It is the outermost of the islands worked by the day boats, which is exactly what makes it good and what makes it fragile. Water that is not pinned against the beach is clearer; a rock exposed on the open side of the bay holds more life than a sheltered sand bottom. The same exposure is why Hon Mun is the first thing dropped from the plan when the wind gets up.
Operators pair it with the sheltered stops rather than selling it alone. Vietnam Active names Hon Mun, Hon Tam and Dam Bay in a single trip; divenhatrang.ru dives Dam Bay and Hon Mun on the same day; Vuongland Travel works three spots around Mun and Mot.
Which fees are paid, and by whom?

So the practical rule for Hon Mun is the opposite of what people brace for: the four operators who write about the fee keep it inside the price and do not collect it separately on the day. What varies is the tax line. Vietnam Fantastic's 46-USD day states VAT and drinks with the meal as excluded; Vietnam Active's 35-USD snorkelling trip simply says «all fees» and leaves nothing hanging.
What is actually under water there?
Shallow coral. The operators who describe the bottom describe it the same way: VictorDivePro sells the route as Mun island, turtles and coloured reef, and adds in the same sentence that the route depends on weather and visibility on the day. Beginners see all of it, because the try-dive ceiling of 12 metres is below the reef, not above it.
Certified divers get the rest of the bay rather than a deeper Hon Mun: Sailing Club Divers names Madonna Rock, Lobster Cave, a wreck, Big Wall, Cemetery and the Hidden Wall as separate sites in the same water.
Diving or snorkelling at Hon Mun?
The price gap is smaller than the experience gap. A snorkelling day is 35 USD at Vietnam Active and 600,000 VND (about $23) per person at Vuongland Travel; a first dive at the same island is 55 USD per pax at Vietnam Fantastic. Twenty dollars buys you the difference between looking down at coral and standing next to it.
The reverse argument is time in the water. A snorkeller at Vietnam Active gets 60 to 90 minutes at each of two islands. A first-time diver gets two dives of 30 to 50 minutes. If the day is about the sea rather than about scuba, snorkelling wins on hours.
When is Hon Mun off the menu?
When the sea gets up. Vietnam Fantastic writes the rule into its own terms: the schedule changes with the real weather situation, and in bad weather the trip moves from Mun Island to the nearer coral reef. Vuongland Travel words the same problem differently — speed boat or wooden boat, depending on the weather.
The seasonal edge of that is stated by Sailing Club Divers on its Madonna Rock page: the best window for that outer rock is generally April to October. The inner bays are not on the same calendar; Dam Bay and Hon Tam keep working when the outer line does not.
How long does the trip take?
Most of a morning. Vuongland Travel runs 8:30 to 14:30 with a group of up to 25. Vietnam Fantastic starts pick-up at 07:45 and drops off at 15:00 on the deluxe trip. The dive boats are earlier and shorter: out at 07:00–07:30, back between 13:00 and 14:20.
Questions before you book
Do I pay anything at the island?
Not at the four operators who write about the fee — it is inside their published price. Vịnh San Hô, Lily Yacht and VEGAYACHTS publish no breakdown, so ask them before you pay. Bring money for drinks, which Vietnam Fantastic charges for at the meal.
Can children go?
Yes, and the child price is published: Vietnam Fantastic charges 32 USD per pax for children of 1 to 1.39 metres on the deluxe day, free under a metre; Vuongland Travel charges 420,000 VND (about $16) against 600,000 for an adult.
What if the trip is cancelled?
Read the operator's own line. Vuongland Travel states that cancelling within 24 hours of the scheduled time is charged at 100 per cent. Others move the boat or the stop instead of cancelling.
Is Hon Tam the same thing?
No. Hon Tam is the sheltered one of the two and carries the mud-bath stop that Vietnam Fantastic builds into its deluxe day. It is what you get when the weather takes Hon Mun away.
