The two great sea days
Ang Thong Marine Park — the postcard archipelago
A protected scatter of 42 limestone islands about 90 minutes by boat west of Samui: the Emerald Lake on Koh Mae Koh (a ~200-metre climb to the viewpoint), kayaking under the cliffs, snorkelling at Koh Wao and a beach stop.
A full-day group speedboat tour costs ฿2,300 (≈ $64) per person with hotel pickup around 8:30 and return by 16:30; the national-park entrance fee — ฿300 per person — is paid separately in cash at the park.
Important
Ang Thong closes every year from 1 November to 15 December; the exact reopening depends on the weather, so plan around the whole window.
Koh Tao & Koh Nang Yuan — the snorkelling day
Koh Tao has the clearest water in the Gulf, and Nang Yuan — three islets joined by a sandbar — has the viewpoint every Samui postcard is shot from.
A group speedboat day trip costs ฿2,300 (≈ $64) per person out of Bangrak pier on the north coast — about 10 minutes from Chaweng or Bophut but 33 from Lamai, so southern-beach guests get an earlier pickup. Around 8:00 out, back by 16:30, two or three snorkelling stops and lunch on Koh Tao, groups of 1 to 38 with no minimum to sail.
The Nang Yuan landing fee — ฿250 per adult, ฿120 per child — is paid separately, so ฿2,550 all-in. This route runs year-round, weather permitting.
Ang Thong or Koh Tao — which one?
Choose Ang Thong for scenery: the lake, the kayaks, the archipelago views — it is a landscape day. Choose Koh Tao for what is under the surface: it is the better snorkelling by a clear margin. If you have two sea days, do both — they overlap almost nowhere. From 1 November to 15 December the choice makes itself: Ang Thong is closed, Koh Tao keeps running.

What is worth seeing on land in Samui?
- Big Buddha (Wat Phra Yai) — the 12-metre golden Buddha on its own islet, Samui's landmark since 1972 (free, dress modestly).
- Fisherman's Village, Bophut — restored Chinese shophouses, seafood dinners on the sand and the Friday walking street.
- Na Muang waterfalls — two jungle falls in the island's green interior, best in and after the rainy months.
- Hin Ta & Hin Yai — the famous «grandfather and grandmother» rocks near Lamai.
- Wat Plai Laem — the 18-arm Guanyin statue over a lake, next door to the Big Buddha.

When is the best time to visit Samui?
Samui sits in the Gulf, so its calendar is not Phuket's. The rainy stretch here is October–December, when short storms can cancel boat days, and it holds one hard date: Ang Thong Marine Park is closed 1 November – 15 December every year.
Outside those months the sea is generally calmer. If weather cancels your tour, operators reschedule or refund — the exact terms are each operator's own, so check them before you pay.
