Most lists of things to do in Tenerife are lists of places. This one is a list of days: eight formats that exist in the south-west of the island, what each costs, and — the part that decides most bookings — what unit the price is quoted in.
Three units are in play. Per person: whale trips, sailing, parasailing, paragliding, a shared fishing seat. Per machine: every jet ski. Per boat: the private fishing charters. €120 for a double jet ski is for two people; €62 for the cruise is for one.
Watching whales, from €28
Six departures, two harbours, €28 to €62 per person. The short and cheap end is two hours from Los Gigantes at €28; the long end is 4.5 hours from Puerto Colón at €62 with lunch and hotel transfer. Pilot whales and dolphins are resident here year-round, but no operator can promise you an encounter, and neither will we. All six are on the boat trips page.
Going under, from €45
A mask and a boat is €45 with BIG FISH in Los Cristianos. A tank on your back starts at €70 and runs to €135 for the PADI beginner programme from a boat. Three centres share the market, in Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje, and the field that separates them for many people is language: English and Spanish everywhere, German at Ocean Trek, Russian at Diving Atlantis.
A jet ski from €65 — per machine or per person?
This is where the arithmetic trips people up. All six jet ski safaris are priced per jet ski: €65 for forty minutes to La Caleta, €79 for an hour towards Palm Mar, WOW's hour is €80 for a single machine and €100 for a double, €120 for two people sharing one Sea-Doo for an hour. Two riders divide the figure; nobody needs a licence, because every route is guided.
Ten minutes in the air, from €54
Parasailing is sold by flight time: ten minutes for €54 or €60, up to three people flying together, both boats out of Puerto Colón.
Parasailing or paragliding?
Paragliding is the other kind of air: €114.99 for 15–20 minutes over Costa Adeje, about ninety minutes of your day in total.
Fishing: a seat or the whole boat?
A place on a shared four-hour trip is €85. The whole boat is €500 for three hours, €650 or €725 for four. Roughly, a private boat costs what eight shared seats cost — the crossover point for a group.
Sailing, and learning to kite
A place on a 40-foot yacht with a maximum of eleven guests is €65 including hotel transfer. Kitesurfing lives an hour away at El Médano, where three hours one-to-one costs €180 with equipment, IKO certification and insurance in the price.
How do you read the prices?
