Two and a half hours in the mangrove channels of Phuket's own east coast, launched at the tide window that opens the narrow tunnels — no boat transfer, no national park, no day lost.

My 15-year-old son and I enjoyed a magical morning kayaking in and around the mangrove forest. The owner and guide expertly and safely led us on a suitably challenging route.

What is this tour like?

This is the small, local counterweight to the big Phang Nga days. THINN launches from Tha Maphrao in Thalang, on Phuket's own east side, and the whole thing takes about two and a half hours: fifteen minutes of briefing and fitting, roughly an hour and a half of paddling, a photo and wildlife break, then back for a rinse, fresh fruit and water.

The reason the schedule looks odd — some dates open, others not — is the tide. The narrow mangrove channels only exist at certain water levels, so the operator sets departures against the tide forecast rather than against a fixed timetable. When the window lines up with the late afternoon, the light in the tunnels is the reason people book it twice.

What you paddle through is a working ecosystem rather than a viewpoint: long-tailed macaques on the banks, mudskippers in the shallows, mud crabs, and the tree snails that live on the mangrove roots. Kayaks and life jackets are new, and guests keep saying so. One thing to set expectations on: the guides are Thai and their English is functional rather than fluent — the operator itself calls the briefing a «hand gesture» one, and reviewers say that works fine.

What are the highlights?

  • On Phuket itself — no boat transfer to another province
  • Departures are set by the tide forecast, because the narrow channels only open at certain water levels
  • Macaques, mudskippers, mud crabs and mangrove tree snails on the roots
  • Two and a half hours door to door — fits into a day that already has something else in it
  • Free parking, changing rooms, waterproof phone pouch, fruit and water included

  • Arrival at Tha Maphrao

You arrive at the operator's base in Tha Maphrao, Thalang. There is free parking for guests who drive themselves.

  • Briefing and launch

Equipment fitting, paddling tips and a short safety briefing, then straight onto the water.

  • Mangrove channels

Hidden channels, root tunnels and small lagoons that only open at the right water level — which is why the departure time moves with the tide.

  • Wildlife and photo break

A stop to watch for mud crabs, birds and the macaques along the banks, and to take pictures without a paddle in your hand.

  • Wrap-upBack, rinse, fruit

An unhurried paddle back, changing rooms to freshen up in, fresh tropical fruit and drinking water.

FAQ

What does ฿1,000 cover?
One adult on the two-and-a-half-hour guided mangrove tour: guide, all kayaking equipment, life jackets, a waterproof phone pouch, fresh fruit and water, changing rooms, free parking, trip photos and insurance. The operator's booking page shows a low-season special of ฿850.
Is the price per person?
Yes — the operator's booking page states «/ person» next to both the adult and the child rate.
Why are only some dates available?
The channels only open at certain water levels, so the operator schedules departures against the tide forecast. If your date is not on the calendar yet, we ask them directly.
Is this in Phang Nga Bay?
No, and that is the point of it. The mangroves are at Tha Maphrao on Phuket itself, so there is no boat crossing into the neighbouring province and no national park fee — which is also why it costs a quarter of a Phang Nga day.
Do the guides speak English?
Functionally, not fluently. The operator itself describes a «hand gesture» guide, and a Google reviewer writes that «simple words and hand gestures are more than enough to have a good time». If you need a full commentary in English, one of the larger operators is the better fit.
Is there a hotel transfer?
The operator does not list one — guests come to Tha Maphrao themselves, and there is free parking on site. Ask us and we will arrange a car if you need it.
How long does it take?
About two and a half hours in total: 15 minutes of briefing, roughly an hour and a half of paddling, a 15-minute break, then the paddle back and refreshments.
Who runs it?
Phuket Mangrove Kayaking by THINN, at 888 Moo 10, Tha Maphrao, Thep Krasatti, Thalang. Google rates it 5.0 across 14 reviews.
Is there a child rate, and what is the low-season price?
Both are on the operator's booking page: ฿1,000 per adult and ฿750 per child aged 4 to 12, with a low-season special of ฿850 and ฿650 respectively. Each rate is printed with «/ person» beside it.
How big is the group, and what kayaks do you get?
The group is small, which is part of why departures follow the tide; we confirm the exact limit for your date with the operator. The kayaks are stable sit-on-tops and you choose between them on arrival or at booking: a one-seat solo with a maximum weight of 150 kg, or a two-seat tandem rated to 240 kg for couples or a parent with a child.
