An absolutely fantastic diving experience with Sea Bees in Phuket. From the moment we arrived the team was friendly, professional and well organised, and the equipment and boat were in excellent condition. Special thanks to our instructor Eric — patient, knowledgeable and always focused on safety while keeping every dive relaxed.

What is this tour like?

A first dive in the sea, not a pool — two dives from the day boat with an instructor beside you the whole time. From ฿5,900 per person with equipment, transfers and food included; minimum age ten. Pickup starts at 07:15 and the boat runs to Racha Yai, Racha Noi or Phi Phi.

This is the introductory programme, not a course and not a certified dive. It exists for people who want to find out whether diving is for them before committing three days and ฿17,400 to an Open Water course.

The theory is deliberately short and practical: adjusting the equipment, equalising, breathing, moving and orienting underwater. Then you go in — twice, at easy sites with coral and plenty of fish, under the full supervision of a dive leader.

You are picked up at your hotel in the morning and taken to the dive centre in Chalong, where you meet your instructor and are fitted with equipment. The briefing continues on the boat during the run out.

Two honest caveats. You do not have to be a strong swimmer, but the operator does not recommend the programme for people who cannot swim at all. And local rules do not allow first-time divers at the Phi Phi sites, so on a Phi Phi day your dives are arranged accordingly.

What are the highlights?

  • Two dives in the open sea, not two lengths of a hotel pool
  • Dive equipment rental is inside the price — beginner courses always include it
  • An instructor with you the whole dive, under full supervision
  • You join the regular day boat, so the day feels like a real dive trip
  • Free pickup from Kamala, Patong, Karon, Kata, Nai Harn, Rawai and Chalong

How does the day go, hour by hour?tap a photo to enlarge

  • 07:15Hotel pickup

Published times run from Mai Khao at 07:15 through Kamala and Laguna at 07:45, Patong and Panwa at 08:00, Karon at 08:10, Kata at 08:15 and Rawai and Nai Harn at 08:20.

  • Dive centre in Chalong

You meet your instructor and are fitted with equipment before boarding.

  • Briefing on the way out

Equipment and the basics of safe diving are explained on the boat as it heads for the site.

  • First dive

At an easy site with coral and plenty of fish, under full supervision.

  • Second dive, then home

After the second dive the boat heads back to Phuket and you are transferred to your hotel. The operator does not publish a fixed return hour — plan the day as a full one.

What's included in the price?

  • Two dives from the boat
  • Instructor with you throughout
  • Dive equipment
  • Transfer from your hotel in Kamala, Patong, Karon, Kata, Nai Harn, Rawai or Chalong
  • Fresh fruit and snacks
  • Water, tea and coffee

What's not included?

  • Transfers from hotels outside Kamala, Patong, Karon, Kata, Nai Harn, Rawai and Chalong
  • Additional dives on days when the boat makes three or four
  • Phi Phi Islands marine park fee — ฿600 per diver per day on a Phi Phi trip
  • Soft and alcoholic drinks, which can be bought on board

What should you know before you go?

Who it’s for
People who have never dived and want to try before paying for a course. No certificate required; minimum age ten.
Level
Two supervised dives at easy sites. Not recommended if you cannot swim at all, and first-time divers are not permitted at the Phi Phi sites under local rules.
What to bring
Nothing technical — equipment is included. Bring cash for the ฿600 park fee if the boat is going to Phi Phi.
Meeting point
Free hotel pickup from Kamala, Patong, Karon, Kata, Nai Harn, Rawai and Chalong, with published times from 07:15 (Mai Khao) to 08:20 (Rawai and Nai Harn); other areas carry a fee quoted on request. You are taken first to the dive centre at 1/3 Moo 9 Wiset Road, Chalong, and board there. The dives themselves are at Racha Yai, Racha Noi or the Phi Phi Islands — islands away from Phuket, not sites on the island itself.

FAQ

Is this a course or a certification?
Neither. It is an introductory programme — two supervised dives so you can find out whether diving suits you. If it does, the Open Water course with the same operator is ฿17,400 over three days, and the shorter Scuba Diver certification is ฿12,000 over two.
Do I need to be able to swim?
You do not have to be a good swimmer, but the operator says plainly that it does not recommend the programme for people who cannot swim — not for safety alone, but because being unable to swim usually makes going underwater frightening.
What is the minimum age?
Ten years. The operator also asks that you be physically fit enough to dive.
Where do the dives take place?
The introductory dives are run on the day trips to Racha Yai, Racha Noi and the Phi Phi Islands. All three are islands south or east of Phuket, reached by the operator's day boat — none of them is on Phuket itself.
Is equipment really included?
Yes. The operator states that all beginner courses include dive equipment rental, so the ฿750 a full set costs certified divers does not apply to you.
What could make the day cost more than ฿5,900?
Three things: the ฿600 marine park fee if the boat is going to Phi Phi, a transfer surcharge if your hotel is outside the seven free areas, and drinks bought on board. Additional dives on a three- or four-dive day are also charged separately.
How much theory is there before the water?
As little as safely possible. The session covers only what a first diver needs at once: adjusting equipment, equalising pressure, breathing, moving through the water and orienting underwater, plus a working knowledge of the kit.
Can my certified friend come on the same boat?
Yes. This programme runs on the operator's normal day trips, where certified divers pay ฿4,200 for a two-dive day or ฿4,700 for three, and non-divers ฿2,600 as snorkellers.
Do I have to pick a date in advance?
Yes — the operator requires a date at the moment of booking, because the programme is attached to a specific day boat rather than run on demand.
What time will I be back?
The operator publishes pickup times but not a fixed return hour. Treat it as a full day: the earliest pickup is 07:15 and the latest 08:20, and the boat returns in the afternoon. We confirm the day's return time with the operator when you book.

“Just dived three days with Sea Bees out of Phuket — an open water refresher with Catri followed by two dives at Racha Noi and Racha Yai, then five dives for the Advanced Open Water. Catri was supportive of our respective levels: the other two had not dived in twenty years. Both instructors were helpful with equipment and all round great to dive with.”

“Sea Bees is awesome. Did a day dive trip and was not expecting what we got — breakfast and lunch were included on the boat and were delicious. Great diving and great dive masters. Great operation.”
