What is this tour like?
Mahalo runs its kitesurfing school from the spot at 62 Hua Thanon on the south-east coast of Koh Samui, and the Discovery Session is where the school starts people who are curious about kitesurfing but not yet committed to a course. Three hours, ฿7,000, and the school's own description of what is in it: theory on the beach and the safety systems, learning how to control the kite, then practice in the water with several exercises.
Every course at Mahalo is listed as including a private instructor, all the necessary equipment and insurance for that equipment, so nothing has to be rented or brought.
If the session works out, the school's ladder continues. A beginner course of six hours at ฿13,000, split over two to three days, repeats the entry-level skills and moves on to body dragging up and downwind and then water starts on the board. An extended beginner course of nine hours at ฿19,000 covers consistent riding in both directions, upwind riding and transitions, after which the school says you are an independent kitesurfer. A full course runs twelve hours at ฿24,000.
Hourly lessons are sold separately — private lessons from ฿2,500 an hour, semi-private (two people, one instructor and one set of gear) from ฿1,900 an hour. The Google Maps profile for the Hua Thanon spot stands at 4.9 from 181 reviews.
