Koh Tao sits about ninety minutes north of Koh Samui by speedboat, and it is the one neighbouring island worth a six-in-the-morning alarm: the water is clearer than anything off Samui's own beaches, and Koh Nang Yuan next door is the sandbar picture people actually travel for. All of it fits into a single day — but three different days are on sale, and they are not the same purchase.

How does a Koh Tao day trip from Koh Samui work?
Three ways, and they differ less in speed than in who assembles the day for you. The scheduled catamaran sells you a crossing: what happens on the island, and whether you make the boat back, is your problem. The speedboat trip sells a finished day with snorkel stops and lunch. The dive trip sells two dives, and Koh Tao is simply the address where they happen.
In short
if you are going for the water, take the trip or the dive day — transfer, gear and lunch are already inside the price. If you are going for the island itself, or planning to stay the night, the catamaran is the honest answer: it runs to a timetable and sells a one-way seat.
Where the boats leave from
Everything leaves from the north coast. Bangrak pier, the departure point for both speedboat day trips, is roughly 10 minutes from Chaweng, 11 from Bophut and the airport, and 33 from Lamai; the hotel transfer is included in both. The dive centres pick up along the same north-coast strip, from Bophut, Chaweng, Bangrak and Choengmon.
What does the ferry operator publish itself?
Lomprayah, whose catamarans run the Gulf routes, states on its own site (checked 2 September 2026) that the company has operated since 1996, runs seven high-speed catamarans, and links Koh Samui with Koh Phangan, Koh Tao, Chumphon and Bangkok. The same page gives journey times: high-speed ferry roughly 45–90 minutes, vehicle ferry 90–120, and adds that schedules may vary.
Important
the operator lists three separate piers on Koh Samui, and the one nearest your hotel is not automatically the Bangrak one. The live timetable loads by script rather than sitting in the page, so it has to be checked on the operator's site on the day you buy. The operator publishes fares only in its date search, so check them there.
The speedboat day to Koh Tao and Koh Nang Yuan
The whole day, decided for you. Koh Tao & Koh Nang Yuan by speedboat with My Samui Island Tour costs ฿2,300 (≈ $64) per person and runs 8.5 hours door to door. The Koh Nang Yuan landing fee is not inside that: ฿250 (≈ $7) for adults and ฿120 (≈ $3) for children, paid on the island itself.
The timetable is the same every day: pickup at 08:00, cast off from Bangrak at 09:00, about ninety minutes to Nang Yuan, the climb to the viewpoint at 10:30, snorkelling off Koh Tao at 11:30, a Thai buffet at 12:30, a third snorkel stop at 14:00 and back on Samui at 16:30. Mask, snorkel and life vest are handed out on board.
The operator states a group of one to thirty-eight: there is no minimum for the boat to run, so two of you will still sail. Guides work in English and German. A light breakfast, the buffet, fruit, water, the snorkel kit and insurance are inside the price along with the transfer.

Tip
price the family with the landing fee from the start. Two adults and one child come to ฿6,900 (≈ $191) for the trip itself plus ฿620 (≈ $17) at Nang Yuan — ฿7,520 (≈ $208) for the day. The tour price is the same for a child; the discount, such as it is, sits only in the island fee.
A first dive off Koh Tao without a certificate
No certificate needed and two dives to a maximum of 12 metres. Try scuba diving off Koh Tao with The Life Aquatic costs ฿5,900 (≈ $163) per person, runs about eight hours, and caps the instructor at two students. The minimum age is ten.
The day runs to one shape: pickup between 08:00 and 08:15, the centre's own speedboat to Koh Tao from 09:00 to 10:30, the first dive at 10:30, lunch at 11:30, the second at 12:30, back from 14:00 and at your hotel by 16:00. Transfer, gear, learning materials, the certification fee, soft drinks and lunch are included.

Important
you cannot fly for 18 hours after the last dive. If your flight off Samui leaves the next morning, do the arithmetic before you book, not after. The centre also asks you to read its medical questionnaire in advance, because some answers mean a doctor's sign-off before you sign up at all.
If someone in the group would rather stay on the surface, the same sites work for snorkelling and the centre sells a snorkeller's place on that same Koh Tao day for ฿2,900 (≈ $80). And if the dive lands well, the upgrade to SSI Basic Diver is free, and signing up for an Open Water course within six months counts this first dive as one of the training dives.
The snorkeller's seat: cheaper, but the centre picks the address
A snorkelling place on Member Diving's dive boat costs ฿2,900 (≈ $80) per participant with lunch included, and the hotel transfer is free from Bophut, Chaweng, Bangrak and Choengmon, other areas on request. It is the cheapest way onto a proper boat heading north.
Important
this is not a Koh Tao excursion. It is a seat on the boat the centre runs for its own divers, and on any given day that boat goes to the Marine Park, to Koh Tao or to Sail Rock. Ask which one when you book. The operator publishes no timings for the snorkelling place and says nothing about whether a mask is provided, so ask that too.

What it does solve honestly is the mixed group: some of you dive, some of you float above them, and everyone travels on one boat. For reference, the same centre's dive days are ฿5,150 (≈ $143) for Koh Tao, ฿4,950 (≈ $137) for Sail Rock and ฿5,650 (≈ $157) for Chumphon Pinnacle with Koh Tao. It is a Swiss-managed, German-speaking centre in Bophut.
What does a day to Koh Tao cost?
All three organised options leave from the north coast and include the hotel transfer. What separates them is what the money buys once you are on the water.
| Option | Price and unit | Length | Extra on the day | Who it fits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Koh Tao & Nang Yuan speedboat, My Samui Island Tour | ฿2,300 per person | 8.5 h | ฿250 adult, ฿120 child island fee | First trip to the Gulf; families |
| Try scuba off Koh Tao, The Life Aquatic | ฿5,900 per person | ~8 h | None listed | Never dived, from age 10 |
| Snorkeller's seat, Member Diving | ฿2,900 per participant | Not published | None listed | Mixed groups where some dive |
| Scheduled catamaran, Lomprayah | Fare on the operator's site | 45–90 min each way | Everything on the island | The island itself, or an overnight |
In short
฿2,300 (≈ $64) buys the viewpoint and three snorkel stops, ฿5,900 (≈ $163) buys two dives with an instructor to yourself and one other student, and ฿2,900 (≈ $80) buys a boat seat without a guarantee the boat is going to Koh Tao that day.
Which one is yours
First time in the Gulf — the speedboat trip. It gives you both Nang Yuan and the Koh Tao reefs in one day, and nothing has to be decided en route. Two of you is enough for the boat to run.
Curious about breathing underwater — the try dive. It is the reason people come to Koh Tao at all, it works from age ten, and it converts into a course later if you want it to. Just keep the 18-hour flight rule in view.
A group where some dive and some do not — the Member Diving boat, with the destination confirmed before you pay. And if what you want is Koh Tao itself, its own beaches and a night there, take the catamaran: that is a crossing, not a day out, and the planning stays with you.
The rest of the island's water days — Ang Thong, Sail Rock, the sunset sail — sit together in the Koh Samui catalogue, and What to See in Koh Samui in 2026 covers the land side.
