Koh Samui Beaches: Which Coast to Choose and When

Koh Samui has four coasts and they are not interchangeable. One month the swell arrives from the east, another the wind blows from the west — and the island's "best beach" moves with the direction, not with its ranking in a listicle.

So the beaches below are sorted by coast rather than by rank: what each one is open to, what it is sheltered from, and what leaves it for the sea. Wind and wave directions come from climate archives; the departure points and prices come from the operators.

Which beach on Koh Samui should you choose?

The one with its back to your month's wind. From November to February wind and swell come out of the east and north-east, so the eastern and northern beaches are exposed. From June to September the wind swings to the west-south-west and the west coast becomes the open one.

The seasons differ in force as well as direction. From November to January the mean wave is 0.63–0.67 m with eight to ten days a month topping a metre. From May to October the mean wave is 0.21–0.34 m and there are, on average, no metre days at all.

How do Samui's coasts differ?

Samui's shores divide neatly by compass point, and that changes the question itself. On most resorts the choice comes down to "nearer the centre or further out"; here it comes down to which way your beach looks and what it sees.

• East: Chaweng and Lamai — 10 minutes to Bangrak pier from Chaweng, 33 from Lamai.
• North: Maenam, Bophut, Bangrak, Choeng Mon — the view of Phangan and almost every sea departure.
• West: Nathon, Lipa Noi, Taling Ngam — the side facing the mainland and the ferries.
• South and south-east: Hua Thanon and the way out to the Five Islands and Koh Taen.

The east coast: Chaweng and Lamai

The eastern side is where the swell lands from November to March: its direction over those months runs 79–123°, straight into the shore. That does not mean "do not swim", it means December and January will be visibly livelier here than on the west.

The practical side: Chaweng is about 10 minutes from Bangrak pier, Lamai 33. Those twenty-odd minutes decide what time you are collected from the hotel for a morning departure, and they are what make Chaweng a convenient base for sea days.

The north coast: Maenam, Bophut, Bangrak, Choeng Mon

The north faces Phangan, and almost everything that goes to sea goes from here. Bangrak pier and Petcherat pier are on this coast, as are the Bophut dive centres; the kite school is not here but on the other side of the island. The summer west wind only clips the north shore.

Jet skis out of Maenam

The four-hour jet ski tour leaves the Adrenaline Vibes base on the north coast: ฿6,500 ≈ $180 per jet ski for two, briefing at 09:00, a snorkelling stop around 11:00, back at 13:00. No licence needed, and passengers are taken from age five with an adult.

Sunset out of Bophut

The private sunset sail on a 52ft yacht is based in Bophut: three hours towards Koh Som and Phangan, ฿22,000 ≈ $609 for the charter with two guests, each extra guest ฿2,500 ≈ $69, up to six on board. The van comes for you at 16:00–16:30.

South and south-east: the Five Islands and the kite spot

The south of Samui is the way out to the Five Islands archipelago and Koh Taen, and on the south-east the wind works for the activity rather than against it. The Thai yacht leaves from the island's inner river jetty; the kite spot sits straight on the beach at Hua Thanon.

The Five Islands and Pig Island

Half a day on the classic wooden Thai yacht Blue Dragon runs out to Samui's Five Islands, the reef at Koh Taen and Ko Mat Sum — Pig Island. ฿25,900 ≈ $717 for the yacht with six guests, each extra adult ฿1,200 ≈ $33 and child ฿800 ≈ $22; transfers from anywhere on the island are included.

Kiting at Hua Thanon

The Mahalo school keeps its spot at Hua Thanon on the south-east coast, at 9.43276 / 100.01342. The discovery session runs three hours at ฿7,000 ≈ $194 with a private instructor and equipment included; the school states hours of 09:00–18:00 daily.

The west coast: Nathon, Lipa Noi, Taling Ngam

The west faces the mainland: the ferries from Don Sak arrive here and Nathon and Lipa Noi piers sit on this side. In summer, from June to September, this is the coast that takes the west-south-west wind — but the swell in those months is small, 0.27–0.34 m on average.

It is also where the sea kayak day leaves from: the Bluestars boat to Ang Thong casts off Nathon pier at 08:00 after a 07:00 hotel pickup, ฿2,800 ≈ $78 per person with the marine park fee included. Further south-west, at Taling Ngam, sits the TopCats specimen lake — fresh water, not sea: ฿7,000 ≈ $194 per person fishing for twelve hours, half-day sessions from ฿3,300 ≈ $91.

Read the table like this: the "swell direction" column tells you which shore the wave hits. Easterly directions (61–135°) mean the east and north coasts; westerly and south-westerly ones (207–284°) mean the west and south.
