Fishing from Phuket: what to know
Do you charter a boat or a seat?
The Racha Island fishing boat is a private charter: ฿29,000 buys the whole boat for up to ten anglers, ฿35,000 per boat for 11 to 15. Split across a full boat that is about ฿2,900 a head — which is why a family or a group of friends fishes cheapest, and why a couple pays the boat price rather than a per-person fare.
Rods, tackle, life jackets, lunch, fruit, soft drinks and snorkel gear are all inside the price. The cheaper way in is the Racha Yai cruiser at ฿15,900 for one to four anglers, and the evening one is the Big Tuna night charter at ฿18,000 for the whole boat.
What does the day look like?
Check-in is at 08:00 at the Nikorn Marine office on Ao Chalong Pier, the boat leaves at 08:30 and is back by 17:00 — about nine hours.
You troll on the way out to Racha Yai, drop for bottom fishing with rod or hand line, then anchor around 13:00 for a buffet lunch and a swim before trolling back. Whatever you land can be cooked on board.
How do you get to Ao Chalong Pier?
The boat leaves from Ao Chalong Pier in the south, and how far that is depends on your beach. The road transfer is not included and a local guide is not either — ask what the drive will cost when you book. Everything on the water is already covered: boat, crew, all the fishing equipment, lunch and drinks.
When is the best time to go?
Fishing runs all year round off Phuket; the operator names November as the month with the greatest variety of fish. There is no closed season for Andaman fishing, so any month works — November simply widens what you might catch.
Is a shared seat cheaper?
Shared join-on trips exist on the Phuket market from about ฿2,300–3,500 per person, where you share a boat with other anglers.
Be honest with the maths: on the ฿29,000 boat a private day matches a shared seat per head only when it is full (฿2,900 at ten anglers), and a group of four pays about ฿7,250 each — more than a shared seat, not less.
The budget cruiser moves that line: ฿16,900 split by eight is about ฿2,113 each, below the shared market floor, while ฿15,900 split by four is ฿3,975. Above those numbers you pay more because you buy the whole boat — your route, your pace, no strangers — not a cheaper seat.
What else is there to do at sea?
Fishing is one way to spend a day at sea from Phuket. There are also island tours to Phi Phi, James Bond, Coral and Racha; for the reefs there is diving, and for riding your own machine, jet ski tours.
Important
open-sea fishing is the first trip to stand down in bad weather — ask about the operator’s terms when you book, because a cancellation for conditions means a new date or a refund.
